The BJP on Monday said the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya was a result of public anger and asserted that it would build a Ram temple at the same site for “national justice”, as it slammed the Liberhan Commission report as “a political document” which is “biased”.

Opening BJP’s defence on the report which has indicted a number of its leaders, party chief Rajnath Singh said in the Lok Sabha that the Liberhan Commission report was “a bundle of grave errors” and its intent appeared to be “pre-decided” and aimed at “character assassination” of certain political leaders and parties.

The Commission has reached “bizarre” conclusions, he said during the debate and took strong objection to the adverse comments made against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and senior leaders L K Advani and M M Joshi.

He said the report was “not unbiased” and said it was a “political document of character assassinations” as legal criteria for indictment had been ignored.

“Whatever happened on December 6, 1992, was a result of public anger. There was no mosque at the site since 1936,” he said, amid repeated disruptions caused by objections from Congress and some other parties like Samajwadi Party.

“The Liberhan Commission report is a bundle of several errors….even after spending 17 years it has not been able to bring out the truth,” he said.

During the 17 years, Justice Liberhan or anybody else from the Commission had not visited Ayodhya even once, Singh said and likened him to Sanjay, an aide of Mahabharat’s Dhrithrastra, who had a special vision and could give a blow-by-blow account of the Kurukshetra war without being there. “Who is that Dhrithrastra,” he asked.

Singh said the indictment of Vajpayee and other BJP leaders was not based on facts but assumptions and the commission seemed to be “pre-decided” on whom to blame for the demolition and has thus reached “bizarre” conclusions.

Hitting out at the Commission for describing Vajpayee as “psuedo-secular”, he said even Nehru had praised the BJP leader and Rao used to see him as a political guru.

“The report is totally baseless, prejudiced and is a deliberate attempt to target some persons and political parties,” he charged.

“Building a Ram temple is not just religious justice, but also national justice. BJP reaffirms its commitment to build Ram Temple at the same site. When BJP, which was part of NDA, was in power, it could not deliver on its promise despite trying its best,” the BJP said.

He insisted that no ‘namaz’ had been performed at the disputed structure since 1934 and the doors of the structure were opened for Hindus for ‘puja’ of the Ram Lala in 1949.

Hitting back at the Congress, he said then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had gone to have ‘darshan’ of Devraha Baba on November 6, 1989, before elections and had a meeting for 40 minutes. “The government should state what did they talk for 40 minutes,” he said.

As Singh spoke about the events preceding December 6, 1992, Home Minister P Chidambaram intervened saying the issue of ‘namaz’ or ‘puja’ being conducted at the disputed structure in Ayodhya could not be discussed in Parliament as the matter was sub-judice.

“Whether namaz or puja was being conducted is part of the title suit. We are not here to debate a title suit. It is sub-judice and cannot be debated in this House,” he said, adding that the debate should confine to the Liberhan report.

Chidambaram, who is expected to reply to the debate on Tuesday, said the Liberhan Commission was appointed only to “go into the circumstances leading to the demolition” so as to find out who demolished the structure.

Agreeing with Chidambaram, Speaker Meria Kumar said the members should be conscious of the fact that the matter is sub-judice and their statements should not prejudice the title suit. She asked the members to confine to the report.

At this, Murli Manohar Joshi (BJP) said the point was raised by the party to highlight inaccuracies. But Singh contended that as the matter was in courts, there was no point debating the report at all.

Defending the then Kalyan Singh government in UP, Singh said the Congress had in 1945 given a strong commitment not to allow country’s partition but failed to keep the promise.

“Why questions are now being raised about Kalyan Singh’s assurance to the Supreme Court on not allowing any damage to the disputed structure,” he posed. (Source: Indian Express)

In a rare instance in Indian politics, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, who is facing revolt from a few ministers and legislators, on Saturday shed tears publicly at his plight.

The 66-year-old, known for his short temper and as a strict disciplinarian, is at most times stern faced. He struggled for decades to bring the BJP to power in the state.

On Saturday morning, he shocked television viewers as he turned misty eyed answering questions on the demand for his removal by dissidents led by Tourism Minister G Janardhana Reddy, a billionaire iron ore mine owner from Bellary.

In a choked voice, he wondered what wrong he had done to find himself in such a situation, particularly when large parts of Karnataka had been devastated by floods and around a million people were waiting for rehabilitation.

“I apologise to the people of the state for this situation,” he said. Yeddyurappa’s 17-month-old government remained paralysed for the 13th day on Saturday as Janardhana Reddy, his elder brother and Revenue Minister G Karunakara Reddy, and their loyalists demanded the chief minister’s removal.

Yeddyurappa, under pressure from his party central leaders, has agreed to almost all demands of the Reddy brothers.

Dissidents reject CM’s claims of compromise
Meanwhile, G Janardhana Reddy on Saturday rubbished Yeddyurappa’s claims that a compromise had been reached.

“From the beginning, I have been saying that in the interest of BJP and Karnataka, there should be a better leadership,” he said. “I expect our central leaders to the right decision in the next two to three days.”

On Yeddyurappa’s statement in Delhi that he has accepted a compromise formula proposed by party leaders, Reddy said: “Has it been discussed in front of you?”

Congress may be in alliance with DMK but the alliance might be fragile right and may get broken if AIADMK gets more seats than DMK and becomes vital for Congress to form a Government. BJP might be contesting elections with much less allies than Congress but they are also sending feelers to Chandrababu Naidu, Chiranjivi and the like.

AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha has told NDTV that she is getting feelers from not only Congress but also from BJP.

At the election meeting in Chennai, sharing dais with DMK Chief Mr Karunanidhi, who read out a poem written by him in 2007, Congress Chief Mrs Sonia Gandhi remarked that UPA Government did “everything possible” for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Is it really true?

1. Is sending external affairs ministry officials to Sri Lanka means doing everything?

2. Is sending the Indian External Affairs minister to Sri Lanka means doing everything?

3. Did the UPA Government exert continuous pressure on the Lankan Government to stop the offensive against Tamils?

4. Did the UPA government raise the matter in UN assembly and thereby bring more world attention to plight of innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka?

5. Did the UPA government threaten Sri Lankan Government with military action (leave alone taking military action, just threaten of military action)?

How can the Congress President “unconsciously” say that “the UPA Government did everything possible for Sri Lankan Tamils” when answer to all of the five questions above is a big NO?

Congress President and United Progress Alliance chairperson on Sunday said that the UPA Government did whatever was possible to end hostilities against theTamil Sri Lankans.

“Our government has done everything possible to bring the hostilities to an end and ensure that the affected people are moved to safer places and it is due to our government’s resolute effort that Sri Lanka, government there, has announced the conclusion of combat operation,” said Sonia Gandhi, said in an election rally in Chennai.

However, Tamil Nadu chief minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, M. Karunanidhi, questioned AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa getting drawn to the establishment of Eelam during the joint rally.

“There was a time when the present state opposition leader and former chief minister of the state, even did not allow to talk about the issue (Eelam). But today the same leader is demanding Eelam, how pity is this? There are people, who are supporting the same leader, what do we do of such people? This is their habit,”

In Uttarakhand, Congress General Secretary, addressing an election rally in Rudrapur made a comparison between the prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K.Advani’s performance in crisis.

“At one side there is Prime Minister, who in a second was ready to sacrifice his government (over the India-US civil nuclear deal) for the future of India, on the other side there is opposition leader (Lal Krishna Advani,), who even today has not given an answer to the nation on Kandhar issue, Masood Azhar (leader of the Jaish-e-Muhammad) and Jaswant Singh (BJP leader during the Kandhar hijack episode in 1999),” said Rahul Gandhi.

NEW DELHI, March 21 — For five years, Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav has been an indispensable coalition ally of the Congress-led government in New Delhi. His folksy humour, for instance, was used to lethal effect in the debate for last year’s confidence vote over the nuclear deal with the United States that nearly caused the collapse of the Manmohan Singh government.

Now the man they call the Clown Prince of Indian politics has turned the joke on the Congress Party.

Lalu Prasad, who heads the Rashtriya Janata Dal, this week cut a deal with a rival on his home turf of Bihar state. That has not only left the party of independence angry and embarrassed, but also concerned about keeping its grip on power.

The agreement brokered with his Cabinet colleague Ram Vilas Paswan means the Dal would contest 25 of Bihar’s 40 parliamentary seats, while Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party would fight in 12.

For the Congress — which won three of the four seats it contested from Bihar in the last polls — the deal left just three seats uncontested by its partners. It wanted at least six.

The unexpected development shocked the Congress. It underscores how political ambition is superseding loyalty as parties jockey for influence in the days before poll results start coming in on May 13.

Many regional leaders, including Lalu Prasad, believe a fragmented result could land one of them a shot at being prime minister.

“This is a huge setback for Congress, which has been sitting pretty watching the misfortunes of its chief national rival, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” said political analyst N. Bhaskara Rao.

“Lalu and Paswan gave the Congress a clear message that there was nothing to discuss. This means the party won’t have any presence in two very large Indian states.” He was referring to Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Two weeks ago, the Hindu nationalist BJP also suffered a stunning setback. The party that rules eastern Orissa state unexpectedly broke away from it. In doing so, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik severed an 11-year-old alliance.

Analysts said disagreements over ticket distribution and Patnaik’s calculations about the post-polls scenario led to the break-up.

Now the Congress is reeling from a similar setback.

“The Patnaik phenomenon is gaining ground,” said Rao.

The Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi, expects to get 150 of its own MPs into the 543-seat Lower House of Parliament, according to internal party projections.

It expects alliance partners to bring in the rest and thus take the coalition past the 272 required for a majority.

For that strategy to succeed, however, it needs a decent showing in the vote-rich Hindi-speaking heartland states such as Bihar and next-door Uttar Pradesh (UP).

UP, as India’s largest state is called, sends 80 MPs to Parliament. But there too its regional partner, the Samajwadi or Socialist Party, has shut Congress out after disagreements over how many tickets will be allotted to the national party.

In the end, the Socialists unilaterally announced that they would field candidates for 75 of the 80 seats, leaving just five for Congress.

Lalu Prasad has insisted that he will “stand like a rock” behind the Congress president.

But with their principal allies in the two states having turned on them, the Congress has said it will field candidates for 20 of Bihar’s parliamentary seats.

It is also flirting with Lalu Prasad’s estranged brother-in-law, an MP who was not given a ticket this time by him.

The Congress also plans to turn the contest in Uttar Pradesh into a multi-pronged one by fighting more seats, thus cutting into the Socialists’ vote bank and possibly weakening them.

An adviser to BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani says he is certain that the Congress, despite little signs of an anti- incumbency sentiment, will be unable to retain power. “You are beginning to see the unravelling of their grand compact,” he said. “The BJP may have its share of problems, but I tell you, the Congress is set for worse trouble.” — Straits Times
